n8n
A fair-code, node-based workflow automation tool that can be self-hosted locally or run in the cloud with built-in AI agent logic.
The Verdict
n8n is a developer's dream for workflow automation, especially if you're comfortable self-hosting to bypass execution fees. By exposing raw JSON payloads and letting you run custom JavaScript directly in your flows, it offers unmatched flexibility for technical teams. Just keep an eye on the Cloud tier quotas — running out of executions will pause your critical scenarios instantly without a grace period.
✅ Pros
- ✓Free Self-Hosting Freedom: You can host the Community Edition on your own servers with zero licensing costs, processing millions of runs for the price of raw VPS hardware.
- ✓First-Class AI Agent Nodes: Built-in support for LangChain, LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic), and vector databases lets you deploy AI agents straight inside the canvas.
- ✓Exposed JSON Payload Control: Technical operators can write custom JavaScript or TypeScript inline to format variables and manipulate complex objects.
- ✓Executions-Only Billing Model: Cloud plans charge per complete workflow run rather than step-by-step operations, saving money on multi-step flows.
❌ Cons
- ✗Immediate Workflow Suspensions: Reaching your Cloud quota stops all active triggers, cron jobs, and webhooks instantly until the next billing cycle.
- ✗DevOps Infrastructure Overhead: Self-hosting is great but requires engineering resources to manage server backups, security patches, and Redis queue scaling.
- ✗Steep Business Plan Price Leap: Moving from the €50/mo Cloud Pro tier to the self-hosted Business plan with SSO and Git sync is a massive financial step-up.
- ✗Gated Collaboration Controls: Basic project directories, user roles, and Git version control are locked behind paid Business or Enterprise plans.
About This Tool
n8n is a fair-code, node-based workflow automation platform designed to allow developers and technical operations teams to connect various SaaS applications, databases, and APIs. Featuring a highly interactive visual flow-chart interface, n8n treats integrations as structured JSON schemas, exposing input and output structures directly to the operator. It supports writing custom JavaScript/TypeScript code inside scenario nodes to perform data transformations and handle complex variable mappings.
The platform has integrated native capabilities for artificial intelligence orchestration, including custom nodes for LangChain, large language models (such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cohere), vector stores (such as Pinecone and Qdrant), and memory managers. This enables technical teams to build self-hosted AI agents directly within visual workflows. n8n offers two main deployment paths: a fully managed n8n Cloud hosted solution, and a self-hosted option that runs on local servers or virtual private servers (VPS) using Docker.
Our Take
For a long time, building SaaS automations meant you had to make a frustrating trade-off. You could pay a premium for Zapier's no-code simplicity, or spend weeks writing custom API scripts on a private server. Then came n8n, a Berlin-based, source-available orchestrator founded by Jan Oberhauser in 2019. It flipped the script by offering a visual node editor that you can host on your own VPS for free. Unlike most platforms that nickel-and-dime you for every single step or filter operation, n8n Cloud bills strictly per complete workflow execution. Whether your flow has three steps or thirty, if it runs from start to finish, it's counted as a single execution.
We deployed n8n on both their hosted cloud and a local Docker environment, kicking the tires on some heavy data-routing pipelines. Under the hood, n8n treats integrations as structured JSON objects. It doesn't hide variables behind simplified fields; it exposes the raw payload schemas directly. This makes it an absolute favorite for technical teams. You can drag and drop pre-built API nodes, write inline JavaScript to clean up data, and map variables with precise control.
Where n8n really shines right now is its native AI orchestration. The team didn't just add a basic GPT prompt node—they built deep integrations for LangChain, vector stores like Pinecone and Qdrant, and LLMs from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cohere. You can build advanced AI agents with memory, tool calling, and routing logic directly inside your visual canvas, skipping the need to maintain a separate Node.js or Python backend.
However, n8n’s pricing overhaul in 2025 introduced some major financial speed bumps. They removed active workflow limits entirely across all plans, which was a welcome change. But they shifted the cloud plans to be gated strictly by execution counts.
If you're a low-volume user, the Cloud Starter plan (€20/month annually) is a great entry point. But with a limit of 2,500 executions and just 5 concurrent runs, you'll hit a wall quickly. A simple cron job that checks a webhook every five minutes consumes over 8,600 executions a month on its own, instantly forcing you onto the €50/month Pro tier. And if you scale past 10,000 runs, the next self-hosted Business tier jumps to a steep €667/month annually. Even with their 50% discount for early-stage startups, that is a huge pricing leap.
What's worse is n8n Cloud's hard quota limits. If you exhaust your monthly executions, n8n doesn't soft-limit you—it pauses all active workflows immediately. Webhooks, database syncs, and cron tasks all freeze until your billing cycle resets or you upgrade. If you're running business-critical operations, that's a massive risk.
The escape hatch is self-hosting. Since n8n's Community Edition is free under their Sustainable Use License, you can run it on a cheap VPS and execute millions of workflows for next to nothing. But self-hosting isn't free of effort. You'll need to allocate DevOps time to configure database backups, manage queue-mode scaling with Redis, and handle server security.
So, who is n8n for? If you're a developer, an AI engineer, or a technical operator who wants complete control over data residency and API mapping, n8n is an outstanding choice. Its canvas and AI capabilities are top-tier. But if you lack engineering resources to maintain a server, or if your budget can't bridge the gap between their Pro and Business tiers, you might want to stick with simpler, more predictable SaaS suites.

Operator Scorecard
Best For
- Developers, AI engineers, and technical teams who need to build sophisticated workflow integrations with full control over data residency and self-hosting capabilities.
- Operations managers building high-volume workflows who want to avoid the step-based pricing markups of Zapier or Make.
Not Ideal For
- Non-technical managers or business users who lack developer resources to maintain a server, set up databases, or configure Docker containers.
- Teams needing phone support or immediate account service on lower tiers, as dedicated support is gated behind enterprise contracts.
